The Four Agreements

Book

The Four Agreements: A Practical Guide to Personal Freedom (A Toltec Wisdom Book) by Don Miguel Ruiz

My Highlights

THE FIRST AGREEMENT Be Impeccable with Your Word

Every human mind is fertile, but only for those kinds of seeds it is prepared for.

Whenever we hear an opinion and believe it, we make an agreement, and it becomes part of our belief system.

THE SECOND AGREEMENT Don’t Take Anything Personally

Nothing other people do is because of you. It is because of themselves.

Others are going to have their own opinion according to their belief system, so nothing they think about me is really about me, but it is about them.

THE THIRD AGREEMENT Don’t Make Assumptions

It is always better to ask questions than to make an assumption, because assumptions set us up for suffering.

THE FOURTH AGREEMENT Always Do Your Best

Everything is alive and changing all the time, so your best will sometimes be high quality, and other times it will not be as good. When you wake up refreshed and energized in the morning, your best will be better than when you are tired at night. Your best will be different when you are healthy as opposed to sick, or sober as opposed to drunk. Your best will depend on whether you are feeling wonderful and happy, or upset, angry, or jealous. Every day we awake with a certain amount of mental, emotional, and physical energy that we spend throughout the day. If we allow our emotions to deplete our energy, we have no energy to change our lives or to give to others.
